moon over quiet ocean

The Nereid by Krista Canterbury Adams

Stars rise

In a wheel all around.

White shoulders bare,

By water

Surrounded,

This other light rises,

A head

Crowned in halo above

The surface.

But seek the deepest

Cave for refuge.

Begin a new inheritance—

Just like the white creatures

Of the sea,

Seek the lowest depths.

Above,

The moon will still rise,

So simple a circle

So bright and white.
