I carry many roads inside my feet,
Yet none of them knows the way home.
When Your quiet breath walks beside me,
Even the longest night remembers the morning.
The old people say:
"Mmiri anaghị echefu isi iyi ya"
(A river never forgets its source.)
So my heart returns again and again,
Because every soul becomes thirsty far from its beginning.
There are voices that shine like bright fire,
But they leave only cold ashes behind.
Your truth speaks like a small village lamp,
And one little light is enough for a lost traveller.
Teach my hands the work that brings peace.
Teach my mouth the words that heal wounds.
If I follow only my own shadow, I will miss the path;
If I follow Your light, even my weakness will sing.
The elders whisper, "Sankofa."
(An Akan word meaning:
“Go back and take what is good”)
So I return, not to my old fear,
But to the love that has never stopped waiting for me.
When my last sunset folds into silence,
Let my name rest like dry seed in good soil.
Let every hour I have ever lived say one quiet thing:
I was never strong alone,
But I was never alone with You.

Author's note
Nkwa-Chi means "The Breath of God."
This poem was inspired by the timeless message of the traditional Catholic hymn "I Need Thee Every Hour".
It is not a retelling of the hymn, but a quiet reflection on its enduring truth through simple words, African wisdom, and the shared human longing to walk each day with God.
My hope is that every reader, wherever they may live, will discover that the greatest journey is not the one our feet travel, but the one our hearts take toward the One who never leaves us.
Life teaches many lessons, but the greatest lesson is that we are never meant to walk alone. The world may change, people may come and go, and our own strength may fail, but God's love remains.
If this poem encourages even one heart to choose hope over fear, peace over worry, and faith over despair, then its journey has been worthwhile.
This poem is lovingly dedicated to every person who has ever whispered a prayer in silence, carried a hidden burden, searched for hope in the dark, or longed for a place of peace.
It is also dedicated to our parents, elders, and faithful teachers who showed us that true strength begins with humble trust in God.
