Artist's note

I have admired the Greek myths since I first read poet and writer Robert Graves compendium in two volumes. His commentary helped me understand the myriad gods and goddesses. The storm and high tide in “Sea and Sky” evokes Poseidon, god of waves. “Storied Sea” has a slight cream frame along the upper right hand corner and top edge. I used a palette knife for these swells to create the overwhelming immensity and power of the ocean. “Vessel,” like the others, was done with oil on canvas. It’s a single-handled traditional Greek vase. I struggle with still life, but tried to find—by repeated layering up of impasto paint and scraping away—the spirit of an amphora.
