When You Learn to Love by Manoranjan Sahoo, translated by Pitambar Naik

Jump to Odia version

When the heart is trained to love

even a bit of laughter, a little of a dearth

a bit of death, a bit of spinach,

a bit of boiled rice, a bit of insanity

day or night, the moon or memory

a bit of a wound or a bit of weariness

or a bit of enmity, all become one's kith and kin.

You can travel through the territory of a

collapsed history in the floating cloud

you can tuck into the cleavage of the earth

you can accompany some helpless wounds

as an umbrella throughout their exodus

when you’re trained to love, the chemistry

of even an acrimony becomes a lip-lock.

You can transmigrate even your

heartbeats to a prehistoric numb violin

you can breathe life into a departed soul

and you can restore someone’s

bone marrow for another century.

Author's note

In a highly materialistic society like ours, one of the most difficult deals could be to keep up, nourish, and make a relationship more efficacious and worthwhile. At times, many of us have a relationship almost without love, that is the missing element in a relational delicacy. Why is it so? We need to answer this question. In this small poignant and moving piece of poem, Manoranjan Sahoo explores the aftermath of a loving relationship and the power it holds which we seldom realise in our journey. He tries to exegete in a nutshell, how love is contagious, where it can take you and what it can offer your life. May love heal our wounds, may love fill up all the fissures we hold in our bodies and lives.
